The 'permanent and pensionable' status of public-sector jobs will be used by the Government to fight back against pay demands, the Irish Independent can reveal.
The high value of pensions and job security enjoyed by public sector workers will be firmly on the negotiating table after it emerged a garda's retirement pot is worth up to €40,000 a year. Putting a monetary value on pensions has major implications for the public sector.
An expert group on public-sector pay will be examining pensions. A senior Government source told the Irish Independent terms and conditions like pensions and permanency will "have to be taken into account" in pay talks.
