A PENSIONER who fought to join his wife of 66 years in a nursing home died "of a broken heart" just four weeks after she passed away, writes Greg Harkin.
Patrick Rushe (94) battled bureaucracy for 18 months to be allowed to move into the same nursing home in Sligo as his wife Molly (92).
Last September the HSE finally gave the go-ahead for the move to Nazareth Nursing Home in the town, but Molly died just 10 weeks later. "My father missed my mother so much when they were apart for all that time," said their daughter, Alice Gilmartin.
"Dad probably died of a broken heart. I always knew that if one of them went, the other would go, because they were always together."
Mr Rushe was laid to rest this week beside his wife in Skreen cemetery, Dromard, Co Sligo.
