Pensioner dies after car veers off road

A PENSIONER was killed in a road traffic accident in Co Donegal in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Gardai are investigating the cause of the single-vehicle fatal incident at Fintown.

The man killed in the crash was named locally as Eddie McGuigan. He died when his Toyota Yaris left the road and went into a field.

Mr McGuigan was in his mid seventies and from the area.

"At approximately 00.15 hours a man, aged in his seventies, died when the motor car he was driving veered off the road and into a field at Meenmore, Fintown," a garda spokesman said. "His body was removed by ambulance to Letterkenny Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

"Forensic-collision investigators have been notified and traffic diversions are in place."

The dead man was a married man who did not have any children. His wife Kitty was being comforted by family and friends last night .
