A pedestrian (26) was killed early this morning when he was struck by a car in county Galway.

The accident occurred in Loughrea Town on the N66 (the Loughrea to Galway Road) in Galway today after 5.30am.

The 26-year-old was pronounced dead at scene.

His body was taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, County Galway where a post mortem is to be arranged.

The driver and sole occupant of the car, a 19-year-old man, was uninjured.

The road is currently closed to facilitate Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and diversions are in place.

GardaĆ­ are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those who may have travelled the N66 Loughrea-Galway Road, through Loughrea Town between 1.30am and 5.30am today to contact Loughrea Garda Station on 091 841222, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
