A pedestrian (26) was killed early this morning when he was struck by a car in county Galway.

The accident occurred in Loughrea Town on the N66 (the Loughrea to Galway Road) in Galway today after 5.30am.

The 26-year-old was pronounced dead at scene.

His body was taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, County Galway where a post mortem is to be arranged.

The driver and sole occupant of the car, a 19-year-old man, was uninjured.

The road is currently closed to facilitate Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those who may have travelled the N66 Loughrea-Galway Road, through Loughrea Town between 1.30am and 5.30am today to contact Loughrea Garda Station on 091 841222, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
