Parents warned to check face paint contents for lead

Eilish O'Reagan Health Correspondent

PARENTS need to be alert this Halloween for children's face paints which may contain harmful levels of lead.

A new survey showed seven in 10 parents admit they do not routinely check ingredients in face paints.

This is despite three-quarters of parents being aware of the need to choose lead-free paints, according to the Irish Medicines Board (IMB).

Lead is known to affect brain development and while there have been no reports of harm so far the advice is to avoid any exposure for children.

IMB cosmetics compliance manager Lorraine Nolan said: "We would ask all parents to be mindful of this issue and look for the correct information on the paints packaging, such as an EU address and details of the country of origin, and to always purchase from reputable retailers."

Meanwhile, the annual Halloween spooktacular Boo at the Zoo takes place on Sunday, 28 and Wednesday, 31 October.

To celebrate Halloween Dublin Zoo has transformed the exotic Kaziranga Forest Trail into a festive pumpkin patch where Upali, the new bull elephant and the female elephants had great fun smashing pumpkins.
