The parents of murdered student Karen Buckley have welcomed their first grandson into the world.

Fr Joe O'Keeffe, who stood with the Buckley family through the sentencing of her killer Alexander Pacteau, said the birth of the grandchild "has brought a new joy" into the family.

Student Karen was brutally murdered in Glasgow on April 12, 2015, by Pacteau. A special memorial service is to be held in Glasgow to mark the first anniversary of her death.

Karen's Glasgow Caledonian University friends and classmates will pay tribute to the Cork woman in a service today.

The tribute will take place ahead of a special anniversary Mass in Karen's native Mourneabbey in north Cork. Fr O'Keeffe will celebrate the Mass, which is understood to be in the Church of St Michael the Archangel in Analeentha.

Fr O'Keeffe said: "The family are coping as best they can. It will obviously take a long time for them to come to terms with what happened to Karen."

Pacteau was jailed for 23 years for murdering Karen.
