Parents have to wait till 2013 for extra leave

Independent.ie Reporters

IRISH parents are to miss out on an extra month's leave because the government has failed to introduce a new EU directive.

The parental leave directive was due to have been enacted in all EU countries by March 2012.

However, Ireland is to avail of a special derogation allowing an extra year to introduce the changes.

The directive increases the amount of unpaid time a parent of a child aged under eight is entitled to take off work, from three months to four months.

The time can be taken as one block or spread out across eight years.

A statement from the Department of Justice said the delay was because of the Government's heavy legislative agenda.
