Police believe a man shot in the ankles in Northern Ireland was the victim of paramilitaries.

The 30-year-old is recovering in hospital after the shooting at Ballymagroarty, Derry, at around 3.35am on Sunday.

The area is predominantly nationalist or republican.

Police said they are treating the Derry attack as a paramilitary-style shooting.

"The man has been taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries," a PSNI spokeswoman added.

Inspector Gregory Smith appealed for anyone with information to get in contact with investigators.
