Paddy Machiavelli finally meets his match
Goldsmith's famous tale about the man who bit the dog certainly came to mind at the launch of John Drennan's new book, Paddy Machiavelli, last week. Normally politicians suffer at the sharp end of the journalist's pen, but on this occasion the tables were turned.
Happily, for the hapless and increasingly nervous looking hack, Pat Rabbitte was in a charitable mood, though he did warn readers that anyone of an impressionable age would be put off going into politics for life if they read Paddy Machiavelli.
Having gently toasted Drennan for a number of excruciating minutes, Mr Rabbitte finally lifted the author off 'the barbie' by informing the audience that the text represented a fusion of John B Keane and Flann O'Brien.
