AROUND 7,700 public servants are retiring in a bid to avail of the early retirement scheme which entitles them to pensions based on their pre-pay cut salaries.
Of these, 2,000 are from the education sector and 1,500 of these are teachers.
Civil servants make up for 1,000 of those retiring.
In addition, 730 are from local services, 298 are Gardai and 192 are from the defence forces.
Critics say the scheme will have an impact on public services with so many retiring before the end of February.
But the Government says it has to reduce its pay bill and has already introduced a recruitment embargo.
A further 3,500 are expected to retire from the health sector between September last and February.
