Volunteers with Childline answered 1,020 calls from children and young people across the country on Christmas Day.

A number of those who contacted the free phone line were experiencing or witnessing violence or abuse in their home and were audibly distressed.

Many others spoke of feeling anxious, sad and socially isolated.

ISPCC chief executive Grainia Long said: "Christmas is just another day for children and young people across Ireland who are scared, lonely, anxious or upset. For that reason, committed Childline volunteers freely give of their time to be there to listen, to support and to empower. For this, we are extremely grateful."
