When it comes to the standard of our bathing water there is definite room for improvement - as Ireland comes well down the league table when compared to other European countries.

Ireland had the joint sixth worst level of bathing water in the EU in 2016, with nearly 93pc of water sites being classified as being of sufficient water quality, compared to an EU average of 96pc.

We were in joint sixth place with Latvia.

Bathing waters are classified as poor quality when microbiological measurements don't comply with values laid down by the EU.

The Central Statistics Office yesterday published the fourth edition of Environmental Indicators Ireland.

Revenue from environmental taxation in Ireland increased to €5.2bn last year.
