Organisation for Childcare Professionals launched

Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald believes a new organisation created to represent Ireland's childcare professionals will bring about higher standards of care.

The newly formed Association of Childcare Professionals hopes to represent the 22,000 chilcare professionals in the state and will hope to work with the Government for further support and resources.

At the launch, Minister Fitzgerald said the Government is committed to reform of the childcare sector.

Ms Fitzgerald said childcare should be a "calling and not a cash cow".

The news of this new organisation comes in light of the damning RTE Primetime report into three creches – Links in Malahide and Giraffe in Stepaside, both in Dublin, and Little Harvard in Rathnew, Co Wicklow – were filmed manhandling and shouting at children.

It also follows details published in the Irish Independent from inspection reports outlining a litany of failures in creches, including a failure to have staff vetted, not enough workers in place and children being put at risk because of poor safety standards.
