One-in-five Irish newlyweds were robbed on their wedding day, new figures show

A WARNING has been issued to couples as new figures reveal almost 20pc of people fall victim to theft on their big day.

17pc of couples have cash gifts stolen at their reception new figures show.

Leading insurer weddinginsurance.ie revealed the shocking figure in a breakdown of their claims.

One unlucky bride had her iPhone 5 taken from her purse plus €3,800 in cash gifts stolen from her wedding reception.

Some 25pc of couples made claims following the insolvency of a supplier such as a hotel or a bridal shop while 16pc claimed due to a death of a close family in the weeks leading up to the wedding.

One bride was even forced to claim €3,205 when her wedding ended early due to the death of one of her guests in the reception room.

There have also been claims made due to illness of the bride or groom with one bride claiming €4,000 when she became ill before her wedding and was advised by her doctor that she would not be well enough to make it up the aisle.

As a sign of the times, 7pc of couples had to claim as one of them became redundant and were unable to cover the costs of the big day.
