One lucky ticket takes €17m Lotto jackpot

THE second biggest Lotto jackpot was finally won last night.

The life-changing prize of €16,717,717, which had rolled over nine times since it was last won on March 6, goes to one lucky punter in the south east of the country.

The numbers drawn last night were 6, 13, 24, 33, 34, 38, and the bonus number was 9.

There had been huge excitement about the prize as wannabe-millionaires turned out in their droves yesterday to buy tickets in the hope of landing the huge pot.

Lotto spokeswoman Paula McEvoy estimated last night there were more than 2,000 tickets a minute bought around the country during the peak hours of 6pm-7.45pm.

"They're big stats but we would expect that on a draw like this," she said.

The bumper pot included €4m from the unclaimed prize fund, which holds on to money that was never picked up by winners.

More than €2m from this fund was added into the jackpot on St Patrick's Day, and the additional €2m was added on Easter Saturday.

Last night's jackpot came tantalisingly close to the biggest ever jackpot of nearly €19m, which was claimed by a syndicate of 16 Carlow workers in June 2008.

There was one winner from the north east of the €350,000 top prize in the Lotto Plus 1 draw. The numbers were 3, 17, 21, 31, 38, 43, and the bonus was 42.

There was no winner of the €250,000 jackpot in Lotto Plus 2. The numbers drawn were 1, 11, 12, 19, 35, 41, and the bonus was 3.

Before last night's draw, the largest Lotto jackpot of the year was €7.4m.

It was won on January 16 by Michelle Ryan, from Athlone, Co Westmeath.
