One dead and one injured after M8 collision

ONE motorist has died and another is seriously injured after a collision on the M8 Dublin-Cork motorway.

The accident, between a jeep and a van, occurred shortly after 3pm on the Fermoy-Mitchelstown stretch of the M8 in north Cork.

The male driver (28) of a van suffered multiple injuries in the collision.

He died before he could be transferred to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

The female driver (71) of a jeep suffered serious injuries and she was taken to CUH.

Gardai from Fermoy and Mitchelstown attended the scene together with units of Fermoy fire brigade and Health Service Executive (HSE) ambulances.

One section of the motorway has been closed between Junction 13 and 14 northbound with major diversions in place.

Motorists on the Dublin-Cork motorway have been warned to expect delays.

The section of motorway is expected to remain closed for some time.

Fermoy gardai are investigating and have appealed to anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them.
