THE torch relay for the London 2012 Olympics will cross the border and come south to Dublin, the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) said last night.
After the problems encountered with the relay ahead of the Beijing Olympics, it was decided that the torch should only travel within the territory of the host country. This meant it would automatically travel to Northern Ireland, but the OCI has successfully argued that it should also travel south because the OCI is technically the national Olympic committee for the island of Ireland.
"After long negotiations, it looks like the torch relay will move from Belfast to Dublin and a relay will take place around the Dublin area," Irish Olympic president Pat Hickey told the OCI's AGM.
Dublin has been pencilled in as a possible torch stop on June 7, 2012, the day after it has visited Belfast.
