Ireland's Winter Olympics athletes in South Korea outnumber the RTÉ staff sent to the games by just one.

The broadcaster said it was forced to send a production team to the games because there would have been very little chance of Irish athletes receiving any coverage otherwise.

Snowboarder Seamus O'Connor was the Irish flag bearer yesterday as he lead out his teammates at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Pyeongchang.

The Irish team is made up of five athletes in total, including four skiers: Patrick McMillan, Tess Arbez, Thomas Westgard and Brendan 'Bubba' Newby.

RTÉ said the decision to send staff to the games was made nearly two years ago.

Two reporters, Clare McNamara and Darren Frehill, and two production staff have been sent to cover this year's event. They will contribute to a daily highlights show on RTÉ 2, news bulletins and radio.
