THE most senior police officer involved in the investigation into Michaela's death is to retire next month.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Yusef Soopun, who spent five days being grilled in the witness box, has been criticised by defence lawyers and been personally accused of brutality toward defendant Avinash Treebhoowoon.
A spokesman for the Mauritian Police Force last night denied that his imminent retirement is in anyway related to criticisms of police that have emerged at the trial. He said: "No, no. He is in the last year of his duties. He has reached the age limit to work, that's all."
Mr Soopun has 40 years of service in the police.
