Officers and INLA prisoner hurt in collision

FOUR gardai, an INLA member and a prison officer were taken to hospital yesterday after an escort van was in collision with a car.

The driver of the car, who was uninjured, was later arrested by gardai on suspicion of dangerous driving.

INLA prisoner Gerard Kelleher (29) was being escorted back to the maximum security jail at Portlaoise when the crash took place on the Mountmellick to Portlaoise road at around 11am.

After the collision, Kelleher and the garda driver of the escort van were taken to Tullamore hospital for treatment. Three other gardai and the prison officer were treated for minor injuries at Portlaoise hospital.
