Off-duty garda tackles armed robber on street

AN off-duty garda heroically tackled an armed raider to the ground after an attempted robbery at a bookmakers.

A man brandished a handgun as he entered the Paddy Powers shop on Main Street, Saggart, Co Dublin, at around 9.15pm on Saturday. He demanded cash but left empty-handed.

An off-duty member of the gardai spotted the man as he attempted to leave the bookmakers and tackled him to the ground. He pinned and held the raider as garda reinforcements arrived. The firearm was also recovered.

The 34-year-old man was arrested and taken to Clondalkin garda station, where he can be held for up to 72 hours for questioning. Gardai are continuing to hunt for a second man thought to be involved in the robbery bid.
