Off duty Garda apprehends armed man after attempted robbery of bookies

AN off duty Garda apprehended a man armed with a hand gun after an attempted robbery of a bookies in Saggart.

At around 9.15pm last night a 34-year-old man entered a bookmakers on Main Street in Saggart.

He was armed with what is believed to be a handgun (subject to technical examination) and demanded cash.

He left the premises empty handed and while attempting to leave the scene he was disarmed and restrained by an off duty member of An Garda Síochána.

The firearm was recovered at scene and the male was subsequently arrested and is currently detained at Clondalkin Garda Station under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

No shots were fired and no injuries were reported.

A second male involved in this attempted robbery fled the scene. Investigations are ongoing.
