O'Brien has designs on silver screen
IRISH couturier Peter O'Brien is to become the lead costume designer on a feature film for the first time, writes Laura Butler.
The Dubliner has been enlisted to produce the wardrobe for the cast of 'The Price of Desire', a movie about the Irish avant garde architect Eileen Gray.
Mary McGuckian is to direct the production, while American actress Winona Ryder will play Gray. The story is based around the controversial belief that fellow architect Le Corbusier, played by Vincent Perez, erased Gray's contribution to modern architecture.
The film starts shooting in May in Belgium and O'Brien flew to Paris last week to attend production meetings.
Finglas-born O'Brien told the Irish Independent that while he's excited to make the move from stage to silver screen, nerves have begun to set in.
"This is the first time I've ever done a film – love the idea, it's great, but it's terrifying," he said.
He will largely spend the next few months "building" costumes for the cast in France. He will join the crew both in studio and on location – which includes a stint capturing scenes outside Wexford native Gray's villa in the South of France.
