Obama greets our new envoy

IRELAND'S new Ambassador to the US Anne Anderson presented her credentials to US President Barack Obama in a traditional ceremony at the White House.

Ms Anderson was permanent representative to the United Nations before taking the job in Washington. She has already pinpointed the tricky subjects of immigration reform and economic ties between the US and Ireland as being high on her agenda.

The new ambassador, who has been in Washington for a number of weeks, replaced departing Ambassador Michael Collins in a major shuffle of Irish representatives abroad.

More than 20 Irish ambassadors have been appointed to new posts in recent weeks, with new heads of mission at key capital cities including Washington, Beijing and London.

Their task is to promote Ireland's economic interests in their new territories.
