OAP killed, three hurt in crash

Jane O'Faherty

A WOMAN in her 80s has been killed and several members of her family injured in a car crash in Co Monaghan.

The collision took place on the R188 Monaghan to Cootehill road at approximately 5.30pm on Saturday evening, when two cars collided at Stranooden.

The pensioner was a passenger in one car, and was taken to Cavan General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. She was one of five people travelling in that car, and it is understood that they were members of the same family.

The driver of the car was also taken to hospital, along with a male in his 90s, with minor injuries. It is believed that the driver, in her forties, and the man were the daughter and husband of the deceased lady.

The sole occupant of the second car, a woman in her 70s, was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
