Number of empty business premises up 12pc this year
THE number of empty shops, offices and business premises on Ireland's main streets is up 12pc on the same time last year.
There are 26,648 empty premises – almost 3,000 more than last year.
Sligo has the most empty shops, offices and business spaces overall – rising from 14pc last year to 15pc.
The latest nationwide census of empty business buildings was conducted by 5,600 postmen and delivery staff on behalf of An Post subsidiary GeoDirectory.
City centres were assessed separately, given that they tend to be the hardest-hit locations within a county area.
Of the city centres, Limerick had the highest rate of empty business buildings at 17.2pc. Next comes Galway city centre at 15.8pc and Waterford city centre at 15.2pc. Dublin city centre was at 13.9pc and Cork city centre was at 13pc.
