Weather forecaster Nuala Carey will be hoping to sprinkle some financial cheer around the country over the festive period.

She is on Lotto draw duty on RTE One over the Christmas and New Year, and has her fingers crossed that a lucky player or players will strike gold and have a Christmas to remember.

The National Lottery has revealed it created 21 millionaires in 2017.

New figures just released show that more than 21 prizes of €1m or over were won this year in a total prize pay-out of just over €440m.

A massive €150m was won on scratchcards.

And the contribution to good causes all over Ireland from National Lottery sales in 2017 was a mega €220m - an average of €600,000 every day (30 cents in every euro of sales goes back to communities in the areas of health, sport, arts, heritage and education).

National Lottery CEO Dermot Griffin said: "This has been a phenomenal year for the National Lottery in which we celebrated our 30th birthday.

"We had 11 Lotto jackpot wins, two Irish winners of the EuroMillions Jack- pot and six top prize winners of the Daily Millions draw."

And it will be adding to that tally with its special Christmas Millionaire Raffle draw on New Year's Eve, with a guaranteed top prize of €1m.
