THE majestic Norwegian tall ship SS Statsraad Lehmkuhl cruised into Dublin Port yesterday, offering a taste of things to come in the capital next year.

Dublin has been confirmed as the final port for the Tall Ships Race 2012 for the first time since 1998. And yesterday, the largest ship in the Norwegian fleet proved exactly why the spectacle event of world sailing is so valuable to the city.

The four-day festival is to run from August 23 next year and will see about 100 ships similar to the Statsraad Lehmkuhl come into port.

Waterford city hosted the fleet last month, reaping an estimated €35m for the local economy.

Now docked at Sir John Rogerson's Quay, the Statsraad Lehmkuhl is open to the public with free admission today and tomorrow.

Deputy Dublin Lord Mayor Maria Parodi said: "We hope the crew will enjoy their short time in Dublin and we hope to welcome them all back here with the Tall Ships Race next August."
