No silver bullet for Rabbitte
COMMUNICATIONS Minister Pat Rabbitte slipped into the 35th annual Economic Policy Conference in Galway, but he struck a glum note on leaving. "I don't think that I heard any silver bullet that will get us out of the economic morass into which we have been plunged," he told the Irish Independent.
Could he have been on a fishing exercise on child benefit, in search of some inspiration for his Cabinet and party colleague Joan Burton?
The parent and carers NGO Curam was delivering a presentation on welfare benefit, which highlighted the levels of household debt and rising costs for families.
They proposed a credits system be awarded to each child, which could be increased in the case of children who require specialist care or longer hours of care.
The minister seemed impressed, but gave little away. "I think the paper on child benefit bears a great deal of study, but I imagine that you don't expect that I would say something that might betray the way Government is thinking in terms of the Budget," he said.
