Nine held after gardai swoop on gang linked to spate of robberies
Nine suspects are in custody after gardai launched a major operation against a travelling gang believed to be responsible for up to 40 burglaries this year.
Gardai say the gang operates out of Tallaght in south Dublin and in Carlow and Tullow.
They have been terrorising shopkeepers and householders in the south-eastern region since the start of the year.
A number of the burglaries have involved violence against the victims.
But in one case in Co Carlow the intended victim scared off the gang by firing a number of shots from a shotgun.
The gang travel around the country in high-powered cars, including a number of Volvos, but are not connected to the travelling criminals, whose five- litre BMW and Audi cars, have not yet been intercepted by garda patrols.
Gardai have now set up operations to nab that gang.
A total of 14 searches were carried out early yesterday in Dublin, Carlow and Meath under Operation Laidir, which was set up last year to combat burglaries in the south-east.
Seven men and two women were arrested. All are being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
