A pensioner was "shocked to her core" when she narrowly escaped a van crashing into her kitchen.

A Citreon Berlingo van crashed through a wall of the Clare Road home in Waringstown, Co Down just after 9pm last night.

A woman aged in her 70s was treated for shock as well as minor cuts to her head and arm.

The driver fled the scene.

DUP MLA Carl Lockhart said the scene was "horrific".

"A lady who I know so well has been left totally shocked," she said.

"She is such a kind-hearted person and I know this will shock her to the core. We could very well this morning have been dealing with a loss of life.

"This has been very frightening and I would ask that people remember the lady in prayer."

Later police arrested a 27-year-old man. He remains in police custody.

Police are appealing for information.
