A woman has been killed in a car crash on the M7 motorway on Saturday morning.

The single vehicle incident occurred between junctions 24 and 23 in Co Tipperary at around 7am.

It is understood from initial investigations that the car struck a barrier - and that section of the motorway is currently closed off.

The female driver, who was in her early 70s and the only occupant of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorway between junctions 24 and 23 will remain closed for a number of hours and diversions are in place.
