A woman has been killed in a mountaineering accident in Co Kerry.

The woman (44) was on an outing with a group of 30 hillwalkers on Stradbally Mountain near the Dingle Peninsula when she fell shortly after 2pm yesterday.

She was walking close to the summit when she plunged over 100ft into a stream below.

It's believed she died as a result of the injuries she sustained during the fall.

A Valentia Coastguard spokesperson said strong winds brought on from the onset of Storm Imogen hampered efforts by Shannon Rescue 115 helicopter to recover the woman's remains.

Rescue teams from both Dingle Coastguard Unit and Kerry Mountain Rescue managed to retrieve the woman's body, which was then taken to Kerry General Hospital, shortly after 10pm.

A post-mortem is due to take place today.

It's understood that the woman was from Co Kerry.
