A lucky couple is kicking off their weekend with a €500,000 Lotto win after an impulse buy.

The married couple, who wish to remain anonymous, collected their winning cheque from the National Lottery headquarters in Dublin on Friday.

The win came from a Lotto Plus 1 ticket almost two weeks ago which the couple picked up at a Daybreak store in Cork city.

Speaking as she collected the prize, one of the winning duo said she is not a regular Lotto player and was only prompted to buy the ticket while grocery shopping.

“We were buying some bread and milk in the shop and when I got to the till, I saw the signs for the Lotto and decided to buy a ticket.

“As I am not a regular Lotto player, I asked the shop keeper for two Lotto tickets, thinking that I would get two lines. I was a bit confused when he handed me the two separate tickets but I kept them both just in case one of them was a winner.”

The couple said they found out about the win when everyone in the local town was talking about it in the shop.

“We were adamant that we would never be that lucky. When my husband eventually checked the results on his phone, we just couldn’t believe it,’ the woman explained.

Speaking about their plans for the money, she also said: “We absolutely love to travel and we always said that we would like to buy a holiday home abroad. We have already been looking at some beautiful houses so we will take some time out and explore our options.”
