Brace yourself as thunder, heavy showers and strong gales are predicted for this weekend.

A status yellow wind warning is in place for a number of counties including Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork and Kerry.

Met Eireann's alert is valid from Sunday evening at 6pm until Monday morning at 9am.

Some very strong west, veering northwest winds are expected to affect western and southwestern coastal counties later on Sunday.

Gusts with average speeds of 55 to 65km/h are expected and could reach up 90 to 110km/h overnight and into Monday morning.

While temperatures are still expected to reach up to 18C over the coming days, we should prepare for wintry weather if we're heading outdoors.

Met Eireann Forecaster Matthew Martin told that widespread showers, hail and thunder are all expected on Monday.

Mr Martin noted that Northwesterly winds will be strong and gusty with gales along Atlantic coasts.

Tuesday will be drier with some sunny spells but there is a risk of more wet and very windy weather extending from the Atlantic later in the day.
