Met Eireann has issued a status yellow rainfall warning for parts of the country today after Dublin was hit by flash floods.

Areas in Dublin 8 were particularly badly affected, where Green Party councillor Ciaran Cuffe captured video of the red line Luas passing through floodwater outside the Ashling Hotel on Parkgate Street at around 1pm today.

"There was a real downpour around Stoneybatter and the area outside the Ashling Hotel flooded for a while. The Luas was going through about a foot of water,” he said.

“We’ve always had downpours but this was pretty extreme today.”

Forecasters have warned that further downpours are expected across the country this evening, with a risk of rainfall accumulations up to 30mm.

The weather warning applies to Connacht, Dublin, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Wexford, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath, Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford, and is valid until 8pm tonight.

AA Roadwatch has advised motorists to slow down and drive with care as further flooding is expected to take place in Dublin and Wicklow, with diversions in place in some areas.
