Watch: Firefighters tackle huge blaze just yards from family home

Kathy Armstrong

A terrified family were left watching firefighters as they battled a large fire outside their home.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the fire broke out in a car park behind the Downshire apartments in Edenderry, Co Offaly on Tuesday at around 8.30pm.

One woman living in a nearby apartment filmed the huge billowing black smoke and flickering flames and there are also reports that several explosions could be heard in the town.

She told Independent.ie: "The fire was close to the apartment on the ground floor and it was very dangerous."

She said she was filled with "fear and afraid it could get worse."

The crew from Edenderry Fire Station managed to extinguish the fire and secure the scene and there are no reported injuries as of yet.

It is not yet known what caused the fire.
