This is the moment a man "reefed" an expensive bicycle from its lock just yards from one of the country's busiest garda stations.

Exclusive video, sent to, shows the young man walking up to the bike on Store Street, alongside Busarus shortly before 1.30pm.

He looks around before pulling at it several times. Eventually the lock snaps and the thief cycles off in the direction of Talbot Street.

An eye witness, who spotted the incident, said: "We were across the road having lunch and one of the lads saw this man looking sketchy.

"He was looking around to see who was looking and who wasn't looking. He walked up to the bike and then crossed the street.

"He then returned and he started pulling at it. Nobody was playing a blind bit of attention. It looked like he was waiting for the Luas to come along to provide a bit of cover."

The witness explained: "Eventually he just reefed the bike away from the pole and the lock."

The incident was over in seconds and the theft was immediately reported to nearby Store Street Garda Station.

The bicycle is estimated to be worth between €1,000 and €2,000, according to the witness.

The suspect is described as being in his late teens or early 20s. He was wearing a grey tracksuit and blue runners.

"It was just so brazen. If you were standing at the front door of the garda station you would have seen it happen.

"I have had bikes taken from me in the past so it is just galling to see this.

"I just hope the gardaí catch this man and he gets some sort of punishment. If you are going to deter people from doing this there needs to be penalties. for those caught."
