Two women and three children have escaped injury after an arson attack in west Belfast.

Police said accelerant was poured through the letterbox of a house in St Agnes Place at about 10.30pm last night.

The fire was extinguished before emergency services arrived and the women, aged 61 and 23, and children, aged between four and six, were not injured.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said they were investigating a motive for the attack.

Detective Sergeant Melanie McGrory said: "The fire, which was extinguished prior to the arrival of the emergency services, damaged the front door and caused some smoke damage to the property."

Witnesses have been asked to contact detectives at Musgrave Street PSNI station on 101.
