Two people have died in separate road crashes in Carlow and Cork.

A man in his 40s died and four people had to be rushed to hospital after a car collided with a 4x4 on the N80 at Kilnock, Ballon, Co Carlow.

The incident occurred at around 4pm yesterday. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Waterford Regional Hospital.

Two other occupants of the car, both male and in their 20s and 40s, and both occupants of the 4x4, a male and female in their 60s, were taken by ambulance to St Luke's General Hospital, Kilkenny.

In Cork, a middle-aged man died after his car erupted in a fireball.

The accident occurred at Lissarda, outside Macroom, on the N22 Cork-Killarney road.

A car and a truck collided shortly after 5.40am. The driver of the car, a man in his 40s, died at the scene.

His car exploded in a fireball shortly after the collision and Gardai have found it difficult to formally identify the deceased.

The two occupants of the truck were uninjured but left deeply shocked.
