Two men in their early 20s were killed after their car hit a bridge and a tree in an area described as an "accident black spot".

The crash happened at approximately 1.30am yesterday near Ardee, Co Louth.

The two men were travelling from Drogheda to Ardee in a red Seat Toledo when the crash occurred on the N2 in the Hunterstown area.

The accident happened around 5km south of Ardee and on a straight stretch of road.

Joseph Foyle (24), from Mullary in Dunleer, Co Louth, and Fintan Heslin (21) from Grangebellew, Drogheda, were fatally injured in the crash.

One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was then removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The other man was taken to the same hospital with serious injuries. He later passed away.

The road was closed for a period to facilitate a forensic examination, and diversions were put in place.

But gardai confirmed last night that the road has since been re-opened.

Gardai in Ardee are appealing for witnesses to the crash, or anyone who may have been on that road between 1am and 1.45am, to contact them.

They are contactable on 041 6871130, the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
