THE country's first dedicated respite centre for children with rare and genetic diseases will also become a children's hospice, writes Majella O'Sullivan.

A planning application for Liam's Lodge has been submitted to Kerry County Council to build the centre in Blennerville.

The lodge, inspired by the late Liam Heffernan (5), will become a children's hospice after a unanimous decision by the board of the Saoirse Foundation behind it.

Tony and Mary Heffernan, who founded the charity, lost their only son Liam (pictured) to Batten's Disease seven weeks ago. The rare genetic disorder also claimed the life of Liam's older sister Saoirse, at age five. They were the couple's only children.

Mr Heffernan said he and his wife were committed to completing the lodge.

The Heffernans are looking for corporate support.

Donations can also be made by texting 'dino' to 50300 for a €4 donation.
