A TEENAGE boy is in critical condition in a Cork hospital after a horse-riding accident near a river.

The boy, who is understood to be 15 years old, was horse riding near Glanmire on the outskirts of Cork city when the accident occurred shortly before 6pm this evening.

It is unclear whether the boy was thrown from the horse into the river or whether the horse stumbled into the icy water, partially trapping the rider.

The teen suffered multiple injuries in the fall.

He is also understood to have been in the water for some minutes before locals were able to rush to his aid.

The accident happened as the youth was returning home.

He was treated at the scene before being rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

The teen is understood to be in a critical condition with his family by his bedside.

Gardai said the matter is being treated as a tragic accident.

Prayers were offered for the injured youth at Masses throughout Glanmire.
