A TD's office has been flooded along with a number of other businesses and homes in Donegal after a river burst its banks.

The town of Killybegs has been hit with consistently heavy rainfall causing the river that runs through the centre of the fishing town to overflow.

A primary school was also attended to by the fire brigade.

Independent TD, Thomas Pringle told Independent.ie that he was last able to visit his constituency office at around 5.30pm.

It is understood the street lighting is out in the area for safety reasons.

"My own office is flooded, it's pretty bad but it's all darkness so we can't really see the full extent of the damage," Mr Pringle said.

"There are about six or seven premises flooded and a national school," he added.

The school in question is Fintra National School, though the extent of this damage is unclear.

Asked how high the flooding went in his office, Mr Pringle said it was "about a foot or so deep".

He said an opticians and four to five other residential buildings were affected by the flooding.
