Cook, taxi driver, childminder, gardener and teaching assistant - the work of a stay-at-home parent is varied and tough.

But a new survey shows that most people undervalue homemakers.

This emerged when people were asked to put a monetary value on what they thought it would cost to replace a parent who works in the home.

Most people understated the financial worth of the stay-at-home parent, according to research commissioned by Royal London insurance company.

Seven out of 10 opted for a figure of between €20,000 and €30,000 as the cost of replacing a stay-at-home parent and employing someone to take on their workload.

Royal London said a more accurate value for a homemaker's work was around €42,000.
