Dreams of visiting Santa in a winter wonderland may be crushed due to poor snowfall in Lapland.

Mary Denton, of the Sunway Holiday Group, said the situation was being monitored closely ahead of their first departures of the season next weekend.

"Usually the place is covered in snow and obviously it's not something we wanted, but at this stage we're just keeping an eye on it. I'm not overly concerned but we would like to see more snow," she said.

Donegal-based Atlantic Travel said it would advise customers of any changes to its trips. "We will be in touch with our suppliers in relation to any updates in terms of snowfall," manager Emma McHugh said.

Sources close to Santa say a lack of snowfall is making no difference to his preparations ahead of Christmas eve.

"Santa will still be delivering presents to children all over the world, regardless of whether there is snowfall," a well-informed elf told the Irish Independent.
