A senior garda has been arrested in connection to an investigation into the alleged unlawful disclosure of information to the media.

The officer was arrested this morning. He is suspected of breaching the Garda Siochana Act.

The garda was arrested as he entered a garda station this morning by appointment.

Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan has suspended the office from duty - this is procedure in all such cases.

The investigation began last year after a report by former Children's Ombudsman Emily Logan into the removal of two children from their parents in Athlone and Dublin in October 2013.

The report focused on the release of details relating to one child.

Both children were subsequently returned to their families.

Ms Logan found that while the HSE could not be ruled out, the information on the child probably came from within the gardai and may have been an offence.

The officer was arrested at 7.30am this morning in a station in Dublin.
