Local residents were evacuated as the Army Bomb Disposal Team dealt with an old artillery shell this afternoon.

Gardaí alerted the Defence Forces to the presence of the historic device after it was discovered in a residential area at Blackmiller Hill, Co. Kildare.

The Army Bomb Disposal Team was deployed and they set up a cordon after they arrived to the scene at 4pm.

The team also closed a nearby road and evacuated a number of local residents from their homes as a safety precaution.

The shell was removed to a “safe military location for further examination” and the scene was declared safe at 5.07pm.

In a statement, the Defence Forces explained: “Legacy munitions from conflicts in the early 20th century can be encountered from time to time.

“Should members of the public find such devices they are advised to maintain a safe distance, inform the Gardaí, who in turn will request Defence Forces assistance.”
