Rainfall warning in place for five counties as Hurricane Gert approaches
Prepare for a washout weekend as rainfall warnings are in place for five counties and 30 to 40mm of rain is expected.
Don't forget your umbrella and rain-jacket as Hurricane Gert is set to bring unsettled weather to many parts of Ireland over the coming days.
Met Eireann has issued rainfall warnings until 4pm today for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.
They said in a statement: "Showers will merge at times to give longer spells of rain with some heavy or thundery downpours giving rainfall totals of 30 to 40 mm and the risk of spot flooding."
There's bad news for potato farmers, as our national forecaster has said there are conditions conducive to blight, particularly in Atlantic coastal areas.
This evening is set to be blustery, with thundery, heavy showers predicted, which will move from the mid-west into Leinster this afternoon.
Met Eireann has warned there could be some spot flooding but they will become more scattered into the evening.
There will be more northwest breezes tomorrow morning but overall there will be a lot of dry weather and sunny spells, although there will be some scattered showers.
The rain will extend northwards on Sunday and it is expected to turn heavy and thundery at times, although Ulster is set to stay dry until the evening.
Hurricane Gert is the second of the season in the Atlantic Ocean and is set to reach the east coast of Ireland this weekend, before it's absorbed into a low pressure system on Sunday and into Monday.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that it could have a nasty affect on our weather, although Met Eireann says it's too soon to tell for certain.
Forecaster Deirdre Lowe told Independent.ie: “It’s basically going to mean very unsettled weather. It’s predicted to move across the Atlantic and the remnants will move to the mid-Atlantic up between Ireland and Iceland.
“It could pump very warm humid air on Sunday but it’s going to bring spells of rain so it won’t be great temperatures or anything.”
Met Eireann has said we can expect top temperatures of 20C this weekend and that will be in Munster.
