RAGLAN ROAD, Phoenix Park and a good farmers' market – these are some of the things President Michael D Higgins loves about Dublin.

While he has dined with royalty, Mr Higgins also enjoys eating out in some of the city's most reasonably priced areas, including The Cedar Tree on St Andrew's Street and Mamma Mia on Grattan Street.

But when the mood strikes for a home-cooked meal, his favourite place to pick up a few ingredients is at the People's Park markets in Dun Laoghaire.

Mr Higgins opened up on his favourite haunts for the 'Hot Press' special on the 'Best of Dublin 2014'.

When it comes to style, President Higgins named Abraham's Tailoring on South Anne Street, and high fashion designer outlet Louis Copeland among his go-to shops for suits.

But when it comes to people, Mr Higgins goes right to the heart of the city – naming Brother Kevin Crowley of the Capuchin Day Centre as his Dublin hero.

Despite all the capital's greatness, Mr Higgins said there is still room for improvement – as he believes Dublin needs less cynicism and more carnivals.
